MSU-Northern Lights wrestling is back in shape and ready to take on fresh competition this week. New Media Broadcasters asked head coach Tyson Thivierge about the single dual with Southern Oregon University and he did not sugar coat the mountain that his team has to climb to get to the top of a win.
“We got a juggernaut,” Thivierge said. “Southern Oregon is up-and-coming. They’re the team of old.”
“I’m very good friends with their coach (Joel Gibson),” Thivierge continued. “That’s something we talk about all the time (is) the competitiveness that we bring out in each other.”
The Lights will then close out 2024 with the “Tournament of Champions”, which is held annually in Reno, NV, an old stomping ground of Thivierge as he got his start in coaching there. He said what incentive there will be with the scheduling that takes place this weekend.
“We have a really tough tournament, but the positive is I get a chance to recruit while I’m down there,” Thivierge said. “The high school tournament runs Friday (to) Saturday, so we’ll get down there Friday evening and I’ll be able to recruit on Saturday and talk to some kids about being potential Northern wrestlers.”
“Then, we compete on Sunday,” Thivierge continued. “A lot of those kids stick around and they watch you perform. That’s a big deal for us!”
The dual with Southern Oregon is set for Thursday at 7pm from Ashland, OR, while the Reno “Tournament of Champions” will be held all day on Sunday.
