The MSU-Northern wrestling team rattled off three straight dual meet victories last week in Arizona. Head coach Tyson Thivierge told New Media Broadcasters that he was pleased with the effort and having the team healthy is a huge plus with the shuffling around they have had to do all season long.
“It was a productive weekend getting lots of bonus points,” Thivierge said. “Friday night, I think all but one match was a bonus point victory. (We) got lots of pins that continued on to Saturday.”
“The six matches we competed in, it was a physical dual,” Thivierge continued. “We came out unscathed with a victory.”
“Knock on wood, no injuries,” Thivierge said. “Just getting ready for Providence on Thursday.”
For the third straight season, Northern and Providence will do battle in Billings. It has become an annual staple in the calendar that the only two sanctioned collegiate wrestling programs get together on the eve of the Montana High School State Wrestling Tournament.
Thivierge shared how special Thursday night will be, but also said that his team will approach it cautiously because they want to get ready for the Cascade Conference Championships, which will take place next week.
“The benefit is (that) it’s a treat to the high school kids,” Thivierge said. “We want to put our ten best out there, but ultimately, we’re going to be thinking about the conference tournament.”
“The last dual of the regular season isn’t that big of a factor for us, granted it’s an in-state rival,” Thivierge continued. “It’s about being healthy for the conference tournament.”
“Right now, we’re at the point where we’re honing in on our 12 (best wrestlers) for conference,” Thivierge said.
