HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – On Friday afternoon, three local lawmakers met with a handful of people in Northern Montana Hospital via video chat to discuss what was going on in the Legislature last week.
Democratic Representative Jacob Bachmeier, Republican Representative Josh Kassmier, and Republican Senator Russ Tempel said that this past week was somewhat slow, but they expect things to pick up in the next week or two.
Hill County Commissioner Diane McLean told the legislators that Justice of the Peace Audrey Barger was against a bill that would do away with suspending people’s driver’s licenses for minor fines. The reasoning was that when people from out-of-town come through and commit a traffic offense, the courts rarely receive the fines that are owed. McLean said that suspending drivers licenses is the only way the courts are getting these fines paid.
Senator Tempel said they were also looking at a bill that would tighten up laws regarding medical marijuana and make the seed to sale tracking more transparent.
Representative Bachmeier said Keely’s Bill, which would change laws regarding dog treats, should be heard in committee this week.
