Longhorns Claim Fourth Place at State C Basketball Tournament

Day three of MHSA State Class ‘C’ boys’ basketball got going in the late morning with Fort Benton meeting Seeley-Swan in the second consolation semifinal. The Longhorns ended up just getting by, (61-53). Four Fort Benton players were in double-figures, led by Truman Giese with 17. Kelton Vielleux finished with 14, Brooks Diehkans chipped in 12, and Eli Arganbright had 11.

That would pit the Longhorns against the loser of last night’s Box Elder game as Scobey would be the opponent in the consolation final. Fort Benton got off to a slow start, scoring nine points in the first quarter, but rallied to have it to a nine-point deficit at halftime (30-21). The Spartans got back to playing better basketball in the second half and were able to walk out of the gym with a (59-35) win to take third place.

It was fitting that the team’s lone senior, Kellan Diekhans, scored the most points in his final game as he finished with 11. Isaiah Smith had 10 for the (20-9) Longhorns, who played their final game in the Class ‘C’ ranks. Fort Benton will move up to Class ‘B’ next season.
