CHICAGO—Montana State Senator and Senate Majority Whip Barry Usher (R) was selected to become the president of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) at the annual Legislative Summit in Chicago.
Usher previously served as vice president and president-elect for NCSL. NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the nation’s 7,386 state lawmakers and more than 30,000 legislative staff, alternates its leadership annually between the two major political parties.
Usher has served in the Montana Senate since 2023 and currently serves as Senate Majority Whip. Usher is a business owner who previously served in the U.S Coast Guard and as a law enforcement officer. He began his legislative career in the Montana House of Representatives in 2017, serving three terms before being elected to the senate. He has served in the Judiciary, Human Services and Local Government Committees, and led the Judiciary Committee during the 2021 session.
