Montana’s U.S. Senators Push to Extend Census Deadline

Update: A federal judge ruled on Thursday that Census field operations must continue through the end of October. The Trump Administration is expected to appeal.

WASHINGTON, Mont. (NMB) – Both of Montana’s U.S. Senators are part of a bipartisan push to allow 2020 Census field operations to continue through the end of October.

Jon Tester (D) and Steve Daines (R) are cosponsoring the 2020 Census Extension Act, which would extend the field operation deadline through the end of October.

Department of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has moved the deadline up to the end of September, a month earlier than the traditional end date.

Montana currently ranks third to last in the Census response rate (91.9 percent enumerated). The response rate is especially low on Montana’s Indian Reservations.

An inaccurate Census count could cost Montana a second U.S. House seat, as well as federal resources for local communities.
