The MSU-Northern Lights football program played its final game of the season on Saturday. New Media Broadcasters spoke to head coach Jerome Souers and he shared his final grade for how his team fared this season and the overall outlook.
“I still think at time, we were competitive, just not consistently,” Souers said. “It’s difficult to call the season a success by the win-loss record and that’s a metric that I know the majority of people will use and that’s what is used in college football today.”
“(However), I am more convinced than ever that we’re on the right track and moving in the right direction,” Souers said.
Now the attention turns to recruiting, which begins immediately this week. Coach Souers detailed the kind of football player he would like to cycle through the MSU-N program and how his coaching staff is planning on bringing in the newest crop of talent, especially in North Central Montana.
“We need character and we need solid people that are going to have the courage to do something that has never been done before,” Souers said. “That’s not in the mindset of every 17-year-old that’s out there, so finding them (and) meeting them face to face, we call it ‘Boots on the Ground’ recruiting.”
“It takes a trained eye to be able to see what the right fit for this community and this university (is),” Souers continued. “I think our staff has learned a lot over the last 22 months that we’ve been here and we’re looking forward to (what) that education has given us with regards to the direction we go.”
“We still will maintain in-state, particularly Northern Montana, is a huge priority for us, as is the State of Montana in general,” Souers said.
