MSU-Northern Basketball Swept in Season Series with Providence

In the start of the final road trip of Frontier Conference basketball for MSU-Northern, the teams were swept by Providence with the Skylights losing, (75-69), while the Lights dropped a (75-65) contest on Thursday.

For the Skylights (11-16, 5-9), they led (36-28) at the end of the first 20 minutes while sharing the ball well and hitting shots, especially from long range. However, the 14th-ranked Lady Argos dropped 31 points in the fourth quarter to just 20 for the Skylights and that was the difference in the game. Ashlee Maldonado continued to lead the charge for Providence, scoring a game-high 24 points, including 15 in the second half. Maddie Dixon added 19 and Keanna Salave’a scored 15 in the second half and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win. Sophomore guard Taya Trottier scored a team-high 14 for Northern, while senior forward Ryley Kehr added 10.

For the Lights (11-16, 3-11), the shooting woes continued. They shot under 35 percent from the floor and the three and let Providence get going on the offensive end. The paint continued to be a problem as the Argos outscored the Lights down low, (26-14). Sam Vining was the leading scorer for Providence with 17, and he was one of four players in double-figures for the victors as Jake Olsen contributed 16 and Jevon Burton got 13 along with Davien Harris-Williams. Senior guard Zack Martinez continued to pace the Lights with 22 points.

The Lights and Skylights will head down for the regular season finale in Helena where they’ll face Carroll College on Saturday. The men’s game begins at 2pm and the women will play the latter game around 4pm.
