| Montana State University–Northern has received a $99,612 award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Earth Sciences Division to enhance hands-on learning in its geology, environmental science, archaeology and agriculture courses through the purchase of modern laboratory and field equipment that will provide students with new opportunities for research, technical training, and career preparation. The award was secured through a collaborative proposal developed by Dr. Kyra Kaercher, Assistant Professor of General Science, and Karyn Billmayer, Assistant Professor of Agriculture.
Dr. Kaercher says “It’s great to get this funding for the purchase of geological and archaeological equipment at MSU-Northern. With the equipment, I can begin training students in how to analyze samples both microscopically as well as chemically.” On top of a microscope, equipment to make thin sections, and a portable X-ray Fluorescence machine for chemical compositions, the grant also will purchase updated GPS and mapping equipment as well as an augmented reality sandbox, an interactive tool that allows users to create and visualize topography, watersheds, erosion, and hydrologic processes in real time. “This equipment gives our students the opportunities to learn how to incorporate this new technology and practical experience prepares them for their future careers.”
Professor Billmayer emphasized the significance of the new equipment, stating, “This is an exciting opportunity for both departments. Acquiring this equipment enhances our ability to engage students in hands-on learning while providing training with tools commonly used throughout the industry. The Pario soil analyzer, flowmeter, turbidity sensor, and dissolved oxygen sensor will enable students to monitor water quality, assess erosion, and evaluate pollution levels within a watershed. As water resources become increasingly limited in agriculture and other sectors, it is essential for students to understand how land management practices affect watershed health and to develop a strong commitment to responsible environmental stewardship.”
The new equipment will be integrated into coursework and undergraduate research across geology, biology, archaeology, and agricultural science.
