MSU-Northern to Start a Men’s Hockey Team this Fall

HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Montana State University-Northern announced Tuesday that it will start a men’s hockey team this fall.

In a press release, Northern’s Athletic Director Christian Oberquell said this announcement comes after MSU-Northern was approved by the American Collegiate Hockey Association to compete at the ACHA Division 2 level.

“A lot of good support when we went out and asked the community what they thought. It’s a great way for us to add a club sport that will allow us to increase our enrollment. And it’s kind of been an enrollment piece to this and that’s kind of how we’re looking at it.”

Oberquell says, “2019 will be our non-competitive season. This allows us time to promote, fundraise, schedule and recruit to the program. Our first competitive season will begin in the Fall of 2020.”
