The MSU-Northern Volleyball Skylights are coming off a weekend tournament in which the team finished with one win and two losses. Head coach Jerry Wagner broke down how the team got the victory in the first match, but how the competition grew more as the tournament progressed.
“We beat a team right out of the shoot, and then the competition was exactly what we were looking for,” Wagner said. “(With Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho) we were right there and playing at the level that we want to (and) aspire to to reach our goals.”
Asked about some of the players who played well over the weekend, Coach Wagner spotlighted Outside Hitter Josie Hasler.
“She was somebody that was hurt early last season, so she was able to redshirt,” Wagner said. “She played extremely steady and is going to be a key for us moving forward.”
Alyssa Pretty Weasel was the team leader in kills the first two games and registered 23 overall in the tournament. Wagner praised his junior outside hitter’s performance during the three-game stretch.
“As soon as you say her name, it puts a smile on my face,” Wagner said. “Alyssa has just been wonderful. She is a big part of our offense. She was her very first year here.”
“She has risen to the occasion. (If t)hey pay a lot of attention to her, it’s not going to matter,” Wagner continued. “She is able to play at that level now. It’s very exciting.”
The Skylights will head to Arizona for another four games in two days at the Ottawa University-Arizona Tournament on Friday and Saturday August 25th and 26th.
