HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Montana State University-Northern is well into their spring semester and Chancellor Greg Kegel says their enrollment has fallen, but only by a handful of students. He says they have about 1,111 students registered, which is down about eight students from this time last year.
“We’re doing a ton of things to up our retention rates and then going after students. You know, we call it digging and casting the net further. And at some point in time, I’m very optimistic that that’s going to turn around and that will be going back up.”
Kegel says that they are moving ahead with a $2.5 million sports complex on campus and he hopes it will be ready for next fall.
“It isn’t about a football field, it’s about student life. It’s about the amenities that it takes to recruit, and I’m not just talking recruiting football players. I’m talking campus-wide. And so, that’s a big part of every student that’s on a journey going through higher-ed is the component of being on the campus and campus life and student life and activities and things to do.”
Kegel says that Harvard University recently did a study and placed MSU-Northern first in the state and 15th in the nation for the upward mobility they bring their students.
