Bozeman – The Montana State University College of Agriculture is asking for cattle and feed donations as its Steer-A-Year program returns for the upcoming academic year.
The hands-on program teaches animal science students how to raise livestock, manage steers, and track data on feed efficiency and weight gain. Program adviser Hannah DelCurto-Wyffels says the real-world experience at the Bozeman Agricultural Research and Teaching Farm connects classroom concepts directly to the field.
At the end of the year, the cattle are sold to MSU Culinary Services. The beef is served right on campus in the Miller and Rendezvous dining halls, fulfilling the university’s commitment to sourcing local ingredients. Proceeds from the program fund student travel and agricultural clubs.
Participating cattle producers also benefit by receiving performance and DNA data on their livestock. Donated calves should be weaned and weigh between 500 and 800 pounds.
