The Havre Public Schools school board is considering a new calendar for next school year. Interim superintendent Brad Moore explains the various calendar options.
“If you look at the options that are posted on our website, there’s one that I’d consider fairly traditional with a long spring break in it. Then the other three are different in the sense of what we’re used to, cause it’s looking at ways to provide more individualized support for students using those Fridays throughout the schedule and each of those calendars are a little different with that, but just trying to address some of our needs and ways of trying to increase attendance and achievement with our students. So, we’re looking at different calendar options.” -Brad Moore
Brad continues to explain how Fridays may be used for more individualized learning.
“Ok the concept behind that, we’re calling it support Fridays, those are traditionally days where attendance, staff, and students is a little less, and it provides opportunity for groups of kids or individual kids to come in work with their teacher or teachers in not such a structured setting like we’d have, to get caught up, maybe do some advanced work, those type of things on Fridays, not all Fridays, but voluntary and so if you’re a struggling student and trying to get a grade up in a class great opportunity where you can maybe spend the entire morning with one teacher trying to help you with your grades. We plan on providing transportation those days and breakfast and lunch also. So, if a student only wanted to come in for an hour to work on a class and go home that’s fine too, or they don’t have to come in at all, strictly their choice. It’s a concept that other districts we’ve seen utilize too, so it’s nothing super unique.” -Brad Moore
