(Havre) – New World Screwworm has made it way to the United States. Beef Cattle Specialist Megan Van Eamon explains why this is a major concern in the U.S. Cattle Industry.
“That’s our primary concern not necessarily for the fly itself, it’s the damage it’s causing to the livestock and what that could potentially be doing to our cattle industry. Right? We’re already at the smallest cow population since the 50s. So if we’re starting to really have to monitor some of these, and unfortunately those wounds get bad enough we will have to humanely euthanize those animals.”
As a prevention method for New World Screwworm in Montana, the state veterinarian has stopped exports of Texas and New Medico Cattle from coming into Big Sky Country.
