Northern Signs Multi-Sport Athlete

MSU-Northern has made an unprecedented signing for its college athletics department. Maurice Redhorn III, a Browning native, has signed with not one, but two sports that the Lights offer. He is a basketball player who also dabbles in rodeo and he has committed to both sports for 2024-25 and beyond.

“I chose (MSU-Northern) because the coaches were willing to let me pursue two sports which I both love competing in,” Redhorn III said in a press release released on Monday night. “(That) school will always be there to help their students get through college.”

Redhorn III stands 6-foot-1 and has had a decorated career in the two sports he will be competing in this fall. In basketball this past season, he averaged almost 20 points a game while grabbing 4.9 rebounds and snatching 2.5 steals a contest to go along with 2.5 assists. He scored over 1,000 points in his Browning High School career and was a member of the All-State team for Class ‘A’. He also represented Browning at the 2024 Hi-Line Invitational Tournament on his future court, where his Class ‘A’ squad won the event over some of the best Montana high school basketball players.

MSU-N Basketball coach Shawn Huse told New Media Broadcasters that he has had a couple of multi-sport athletes sign on for his program as well as the MSU-Northern golf program, but believed this is his first signing to couple with rodeo.

“I feel like Northern is a great fit when thinking of him and his all-around interests,” Huse said in the press release. “We definitely have a special place in our heart for Maurice, and I believe anyone (who) knows him would firmly agree.”

For his rodeo standouts, he was a state placer in team roping, which will be his primary event when competing for head coach Doug Kallenberger. He qualified back-to-back years in team roping for the state tournament and has won the Shelby High School, Conrad High School, and Deer Lodge High School rodeos in the last two seasons.

Redhorn III aspires to be an Electrical Technology and Integrated Health Science major when he steps on campus at MSU-Northern later this year.
