MSU-Northern volleyball (10-9, 2-5 in conference) dominated the competition at the Frontier-North Star Challenge over the weekend, beating Mayville State, Valley City State, and Dickinson State all in straight sets. New Media Broadcasters got the thoughts of head coach Jerry Wagner about his team’s stellar play to not only start up another winning streak, but do so against the North Star’s best.
“The confidence was building based on the last week of conference play,” Wagner said. “That was three solid teams that presented problems for some of our conference foes (in the same tournament).”
“Anytime you can sweep a team, (3-0), and one that was previously ranked going into the weekend in Valley City, that’s really big,” Wagner continued.
The Skylights will be back to Frontier Conference play this week, starting with a tough road test at Providence on Thursday. Wagner broke down the first matchup, a four-set Argos victory, and said that the goal is now to be even closer in trying to win against the No. 13 team in the country, especially with this momentum from last weekend.
“We clearly have Providence in our sights (as) we saw them all weekend, so there was some scouting going on there,” Wagner said. “We had four solid sets that we set ourselves up to win two (of them).”
“We obviously want to set ourselves up to be in a decisive game against them,” Wagner continued. “We’re just going to go in there and try to improve on our last effort, which I believe we’re in a better position to do so.”
The Providence (17-4, 6-1 in conference) match will start at 7pm on Thursday from Great Falls and New Media Broadcasters will have a recap in Friday’s sports.
