Northstars Moving from One Competitive Tournament to Another

The Havre Northstars are coming off of a weekend of ups and downs, but finished the baseball tournament down in Three Forks on a high note. New Media Broadcasters got the thoughts on how the team bounced back from head coach Patch Wirtzberger.

“I think it came down to focus throughout the games,” Wirtzberger said. “(The players) did a really good job after a tough first day where we lost the lead in the last inning and then just didn’t compete well for seven innings in the second game.”

“They responded very well the next day, coming together and not letting one bad day ruin an entire weekend,” Wirtzberger continued. “And then a good offensive and defensive performance to finish it off and get us some momentum going into this week.”

The attention for the (9-7) Northstars shifts to Lewistown, where their rivals will host the Harold Gjerde Memorial Tournament. Coach Wirtzberger said the teams that stack up against his are not only some of the best in town, but some of the top competitors in the region.

“I’m super excited about the competition that we’re facing at this tournament,” Wirtzberger said. “Looking at the field, I think (this is the) premiere tournament in the Northwest United States for Class ‘A’ Legion Baseball. We’re really excited to get down there and compete.”

Coach Wirtzberger gives a breakdown of the teams who his Northstars are going to be matching up with.

“Really looking forward to seeing Butte again, a team that has had our number in the last couple of years. They’re a good team again,” Wirtzberger said. “We get a rematch with Cody (, also).”

“Belgrade is a really good team that had a good high school season (with) a lot of good experience,” Wirtzberger continued. “And then the Bitterroot Bucs, they’re a team from Florence that just won the high school baseball state championship.”

“It just doesn’t get any better than this for me to get down there and compete against the best in the state of Montana and Wyoming and see where we stack up,” Wirtzberger said.

The Harold Gjerde Memorial Tournament continues through Saturday and the schedule can be found on HiLineToday.com under the “Scoreboard!” section.
