Northstars Set Sights on Season

The Havre Northstars baseball team concluded tryouts last week and have their full roster heading into the 2024 season. New Media Broadcasters caught up with head coach Patch Wirtzberger for his main takeaways from the period.

“It was a good tryout,” Wirtzberger said. “We were able to get outside for a couple of days and really see what we had.”

“(There was) a lot of energy from our participants and good numbers,” Wirtzberger continued. “I just was impressed with everybody’s energy and the way they went about things.”

The start of the campaign will be here before we know it. Coach Wirtzberger said that it is his call when the team gets going for the long run and that starting later than usual will be a mental and physical factor for fatigue down the stretch.

“The thought behind it is the summer becomes such a grind with playing six or seven games a week there at the end of June and early July,” Wirtzberger said. “As the team progresses through the season and the season gets longer, you get into the district and state tournaments.”

“Hopefully, shaving a couple weeks off the season at the beginning will give us a little more energy there at the end,” Wirtzberger continued. “At least that’s the thinking, so we’ll see how it works out.”

The Havre Northstars start the season one week from Sunday with a home opener doubleheader against the Great Falls Chargers AA team. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm from American Legion Park.
