HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – A man has been charged in Hill County District Court for allegedly attempting to aid a Detention Center inmate’s plan of escaping custody.
Stephen L. Newbury has been charged with felony conspiracy to commit obstructing justice for allegedly attempting to help Joshua Glen Reid flee from Northern Montana Hospital on June 12th.
Court documents state that Reid made two calls to Newbury from the Detention Center, where they discussed a plan involving Reid escaping custody.
Later that evening, Reid was transported to Northern Montana Hospital after he said he was dizzy and disoriented and had pain in his right wrist and left leg. When Reid was discharged and awaiting transport back to the Detention Center, Reid tried to run away when a Detention Center Officer turned around to grab his paperwork.
Reid tripped over a pile of rocks near an RV and was tackled to the ground by the Detention Officer. As the Officer tried to gain control, Reid reportedly grabbed the Officer’s throat and tried to hit his head with a rock.
The Officer was not injured and eventually was able to place Reid into custody with the help of other Officers.
Reid has been charged with felonies of escape, assault on a Peace Officer, Attempt to Commit Aggravated Assault and Solicitation to Commit Obstructing Justice.
Both Newbury and Reid are scheduled to be arraigned at 9:30 AM on July 13th.
