PHILLIPS COUNTY, Mont. (NMB) – Phillips County has become the first jurisdiction in the region to enact fire restrictions this summer.
The Stage 1 Restrictions went into effect at midnight Tuesday morning and will remain in place indefinitely. This means that in Phillips County, campfires and other fires are now prohibited unless they are in approved recreation sites. Liquid petroleum and LPG stoves that can be turned on and off are also exempt.
In addition, smoking is now prohibited outside vehicles, buildings, and developed recreation sites unless you are in a 3-foot diameter area cleared of all burnable vegetation and materials.
On a DNRC fire call Tuesday morning, FWP Region 6 officials said the restrictions would also apply to their land in Phillips County. The BLM’s Malta office announced on Wednesday morning that they would be adopting the same restrictions.
The announcement comes as much of the region is expected to remain under a Red Flag Warning through Thursday evening due to ongoing dry, warm and windy conditions.
Hill County Disaster and Emergency Services Coordinator Amanda Frickel says that people should exercise extreme caution, especially when it comes to utilizing burn permits.
