GREAT FALLS, Mont. (NMB) – On Thursday, a Rocky Boy man was sentenced to over 21 years in prison after pleading guilty to second degree murder. 35-year-old Gavin Tyrone Sutherland was given a sentence of 256 months with the Bureau of Prisons and ten years of supervised release for killing 31-year-old Shannon Licht-Morsette on July 7th last year.
Court documents say that Sutherland strangled the woman in her bedroom after allegedly hearing voices urging him to kill her.
Late on July 6th, the woman became upset over money she thought was stolen from her and called Sutherland into her room.
Sutherland admitted to choking the woman after hearing voices and seeing what he called “shadowman”.
He left the area for Spokane, Washington the next morning.
