HELENA, Mont. (NMB) – The Montana Department of Livestock reports that a skunk in Powder River County in the southeastern part of the state has tested positive for rabies.
One dog was exposed to the rabid skunk and is being managed for exposure to rabies.
This is the second non-bat rabies case confirmed in Montana in 2021.
In response to the news, MDOL has issued a 60-day county quarantine for dogs, cats and ferrets in Powder River County that are not currently vaccinated for rabies.
Rabies is a fatal disease spread through the saliva of an infected animal. It can infect any mammal, including people, However it is virtually 100 percent preventable in domestic animals through the administration of the rabies vaccine.
