Skylights Basketball Going Back to Basics After Weekend Losses

MSU-Northern Skylights basketball had a rough go in Great Falls this past weekend, losing to highly ranked teams back-to-back days by double digits. New Media Broadcasters asked head coach Chris Mouat what he saw from both games and there were some positives to take, but mostly back to the drawing board.

“We got off to terrible starts in both games. A lot of that is credit to the other teams, but a lot of it falls on our own shoulders,” Mouat said. “Whether we’re missing easy shots early in the game, turning the ball over, (or) blowing defensive assignments, I think our lack of discipline on defense hurt us in both games.”

“I think in both games, we proved we could score,” Mouat continued. “We’ve got to start eliminating the amount of high 70s and 80s. That’s too many points to be giving up for us.”

The Skylights have had this week off to decompress and figure out how to adjust against the better competition they’ve faced here in this non-conference run. Coach Mouat emphasized the need to get better and be able to handle themselves for the next matchup, which will be against Dickinson State early next week.

“Just improve every week. We’ve got to improve,” Mouat said. “We struggled at the free throw line at times, so we’re just trying to get better and that’s really what it’s about.”

“We did play two teams that are (about) 26 (or) 27 in the country right now,” Mouat continued. “Dickinson (State is) bringing in a nice team themselves, so we’re going to have to be ready to play.”

Hear from coach Mouat ahead of the team’s home opener against Dickinson State during Monday’s morning and afternoon sports reports here on New Media Broadcasters.
