Northern Skylights basketball held a team that had been averaging over 100 points early on this season to 71, beating Park University-Gilbert by the final score of (94-71) last Friday night. New Media Broadcasters asked head coach Chris Mouat what he was more taken aback by: his team’s offensive or defensive effort.
“I felt like we were extremely prepared for that game,” Mouat said. “To come out in the second half, execute, and really get a lot of layups, and just run right back at them, (it was) exciting to watch our kids just make plays.”
“It was fun, but going into the game after watching them play Rocky (earlier), I would’ve thought, ‘If we’re going to get them, it’s going to be a really close game,'” Mouat continued. “(We) tried to keep them down so that we were able to basically out-gun them for the last quarter and a half.”
The Skylights will play their first two-game swing of the season when the team hits the road to Great Falls to face The Masters and the University of Jamestown. Mouat shared the brief historical history of both clubs and said that University of Providence Classic will be a good way to see what his team is made of in this stretch of non-conference games.
“Well, they’re both nationally ranked,” Mouat said. “They’re both in the top-30. Traditional National Tournament teams.”
“The Masters, (a) power in their league. Same with Jamestown,” Mouat continued. “Jamestown made the final seven last year at the National Tournament.”
“Both teams can really play,” Mouat said. “Both teams (are) loaded with talent (and) very well coached. It’s going to be a big test for us.”
Northern women’s basketball hits the court at Providence for matchups with the Masters on Friday and Jamestown on Saturday. Both games have scheduled tip-offs of 7pm.
