A Montana State University Extension soil fertility specialist has suggestions for Montana farmers on how they should manage their crops coming out of this unusually cold winter. Fertility specialist Clain Jones suggests farmers apply fertilizer early to help with the growth of the crops.
“It’ll help those crops get a better jump on the season. Even though all soils will have some nutrients that are available to plants right now, those nutrients are going to move more slowly and that means it could take a longer time for those nutrients to move between the rows over to the plant root or for the plant root to go find those nutrients. So, by getting those nutrients into the furrow, into the root zone, then the plant doesn’t have to work as hard to find them.“-Jones
Jones also suggests that farmers should reach out to their local extension agents if they have additional questions on how to handle their crops.
