Havre is faced with an issue. The Fire Station that is conjoined with the City Hall and Police Station has tested positive for surface asbestos, lead, and other heavy metals.
Several different occurrences have led the city to hire the Hygenics company and gather the official data it has today. Josh Miller, the Chair of the Safety Committee explains what had led to hiring the company and testing the building this past fall.
“So, I went back several years, in 2018 we did have a firefighter who came forward and expressed concerns about actually the lead in the basement of City Hall, and then in April of this spring we had the Fire Department also come forward with concerns of the asbestos, the diesel exhaust, and then also the lead in the basement of the building. So, we have a pattern of concern that has come up regarding all these heavy metals, asbestos, and things of that nature, and it goes back several years.”-Josh Miller
Josh continues to explain how those concerns were then addressed.
“So, in the spring the Assistant Chief did some do it yourself testing throughout the Fire Department in regard to asbestos, lead, and heavy metals. We had conclusive results that I presented back in May to council. We then ordered a third party to come in and do some testing. So Hygenics LLC came in, they did some official testing, and that is where we found significant surface contaminants, so that confirmed what the suspicions were.”-Josh Miller
