(Indian Country) Two Bills sponsored by Senator of District 16 Jonathan Windy Boy were given their second readings after being tabled in their respective committees this weekend, effectively reviving the otherwise stalled progress of the bills.
Both bills are involved with the upbringing of Indian children, with Senate Bill 141 meant to revise Montana Indian child welfare laws, and Senate Bill 181 out to revise Indian education for all laws.
New Media Broadcasters spoke with Windy Boy about the legislation, which he says is on an upward trend right now for approval.
“…because the MICWA (Montana Indian Child Welfare Act) passed on a second reading, 30-20, and then the Indian Education For All passed 31-19, so there were health votes on second reading. They’re going to be on third reading tomorrow, and then once we vote them out they’ll make the transmittal and they’ll be on their way to the house of representatives for consideration”
