YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK (NMB) – The U.S. Department of Justice has announced the sentencing of an Oklahoma man for acting as an unauthorized guide at Yellowstone National Park.
Theodore Eugene Garland, 60, was sentenced on seven counts of illegal activities and violations in Yellowstone. He was ordered to serve seven days in jail and must pay $1,100 in fines, fees and restitution. He is also banned from the Park for the rest of 2021 and will serve five years of unsupervised probation.
While the Park was closed to the public during the pandemic, Garland, who has his own podcast and guidebook, violated closures and regulations while encouraging others to do the same. He provided unauthorized guided tours, trespassed on thermal grounds, violated swimming closures and rules regarding cliff jumping, and disturbed wildlife.
