The USDA released a new report on Monday, October 23rd detailing the carbon market activity. It also looks at what might be making it hard for people to enter the market, and what opportunities exist to make the market more accessible too farmers and forest land owners, the most notable of which being farmers facing limited returns on investment due to high transaction costs in the market.
This study is the first of the USDA’s efforts after congress signed into law the Growing Climate Solutions Act in late December of last year, a bill that author Indiana Senator Mike Braun says is meant to keep the market simple, and make the market accessible to participants of all sizes.
Of the 698 farms surveyed last in the last Ag Census, the average in total farm production expenses in Hill County was around $175,000.
