MISSOULA, Mont. (NMB) – The Montana University System Board of Regents held a virtual public meeting on Wednesday to discuss how a new state law that allows students who meet safety certification to conceal carry firearms without a permit on college campuses will impact the University system.
The Missoulian reports that the Board of Regents Academic Research and Student Affairs Committee created a draft proposal on implementation of the new law on campus, but it received significant opposition at the meeting.
The Missoulian reports that for every comment in favor of the proposal, there were 11 in opposition. Many asked the University System to either maintain its current policy on firearms or file litigation to argue it is unconstitutional. If a lawsuit is filed, the University System could lose $1 million in funding due to a contingency.
The new law is set to take effect on college campuses on June 1st. Public comment continues to be accepted.
