HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – The Fresno Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited is once again collaborating with Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the City of Havre, and the Chinook Chapter of the FFA in an effort to place Christmas trees in Fresno Reservoir to improve the habitat for fish.
Rick Harman of the Fresno Chapter says that from Christmas Eve through early January, trees can be dropped off in the dedicated container in Memorial Park next to the 5th Avenue Softball Field.
“That saves it from going to the landfill and it gives us some fish spawning habitat for the perch out at Fresno. Please take the tinsel and decorations off and then all is good. We take it from there.”
Harman says their goal is to have 120 trees donated, and he explains how this project improves perch spawning habitat.
“The perch need these little tree limbs, like the ones on the Christmas trees, to hook their egg sacks on and hang on these Christmas trees that we put in the water. When the eggs hatch, the tree then becomes their protection from predators until they get big enough to get away. The perch are the main food fish in Fresno for the walleye and the northern (pike). So the more perch we have, the better number of walleyes and northerns that we can support at Fresno.”
Trees can also be dropped off at Community Gardens in Chinook.
Trees will be distributed at various locations around the Reservoir this Spring.
