With CNFR Underway, Lights and Skylights Look Back On How They Got There

The College National Finals Rodeo are and MSU-Northern has been training for it, albeit from afar.

New Media Broadcasters spoke with head rodeo coach Doug Kallenberger and he talked about the quirky schedule he goes through trying to communicate with his kids from afar as graduation happened over a month ago.

“The kids all graduated and school ended a month ago,” Kallenberger said. “They’ve been working on things from their homes.”

“We’ve just been (training) through social media together with them and helping them through things that way,” Kallenberger continued. “It’s a little bit tougher. You’re not in Havre anymore.”

Four MSU-Northern members will be participating. Garrett Cunningham, Mikenna Schauer, Georgia Orahood, and Kenda Statham will suit up and try to take Casper, WY by storm. Kallenberger talks about the blend of talent he will be overseeing and how that will help the individuals reach their goals of becoming college rodeo champions.

“The great thing about it is three of the four have already been to the College National Finals Rodeo,” Kallenberger said. “Mikenna Schauer has finished in the top-10 in the nation before. Garrett Cunningham has finished in the top-10 in the nation. Georgia Orahood last year just missed out on the top-12.”

“For those three, it’s business as usual. They’ve been there. They know what the game plan is for being there, so it’s exciting to see how that’ll play out this year,” Kallenberger continued. “And then for Kenda Statham, it’s nice. She’s a sophomore and it’ll be interesting to see how she handles everything down there.”

The “Bulls, Broncs & Breakaway” portion of the competition was held on Sunday night. Here are some notable results from the three experienced rodeo participants coach Kallenberger mentioned:

Senior Mikenna Schauer started her rodeo off in the breakaway roping and did so in 3.1 seconds. Senior Garrett Cunningham scored a 69 in the saddle bronc riding. Junior Georgia Orahood’s first ride did not have a time for her event of breakaway roping.

There will be updates for Monday night’s team roping and goat tying. Competition at the rodeo can be viewed on ESPN3 starting Tuesday with the first of four performances and concluding on Saturday with the championship round. New Media Broadcasters will have results from each night once they become available.
