HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – On Tuesday evening, Havre’s School Board of Trustees held their regular meeting at Havre Middle School. Superintendent of Schools Andy Carlson says they had their official count date on Monday and their numbers were better than he expected, partially due to an unexpectedly large kindergarten class.
“We’re down three on the elementary side, and we’re down four on the high school side. So, a total of seven for the district. The kindergarten class that we had this year, you know, it obviously raised some challenges, but it’s pretty welcome given that we were anticipating probably twenty fewer students than we ended up having.”
Carlson says they have faced challenges with their recent bus trips that has caused them to look at other options.
“One of them, you know, is that we’re sending bus drivers the day before. They’re staying in motels and driving the kids back. I mean these are five-hour, six-hour trips that are happening. We’re trying to get our students back and forth in the most safe manner that we possibly can, so we’re looking at some different avenues. One of the trips, we actually had a driver from another school district drive our bus back.”
Carlson says they have also said goodbye to Jim Magera, who taught for them for many years. Magera left the school district a gift including books, notes and other artifacts.
