HAVRE, Mont (NMB) – Following Monday night’s Havre City Council meeting, the Ordinance Committee met for just over 10 minutes.
The lone agenda item was the second reading of a change to the ordinance regarding the hiring process for police officers. The proposed changes would remove the upper age limit of 35 and add a residency requirement.
The residency requirement would ensure all new police officers live in Havre. On a case-by-case basis, Chief Gabe Matosich said exceptions can be made if an officer lives outside city limits but still resides in Hill County.
The proposed changes unanimously passed through the committee and will now be sent to City Council for a first vote.
There was also a brief discussion of what to do regarding the lack of parking downtown and reviving the Vacant Property Registration Ordinance, but no action was taken on either. For the city to have a VPRO, they would need to move to a Charter form of government. The committee said this could be done by a ballot measure, which they said they would look into.
