HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Havre’s Help Committee, Substance Abuse and Misuse Coalition, and Havre Ford are once again teaming up to provide safe rides home on New Year’s Eve through their Safe and Sober program.
Steve Steinmetz of Havre Ford says this year, the program will run from 6 PM on Friday to 2 AM on Saturday morning.
“We will do it from your house to a bar, or to a party. If you want to go from one party to another one, we will give you a ride to those as well. And then most importantly, we give you a ride home at the end of the night, too … We just really are trying to get everyone to have a decent time on New Years Eve and then get home safely.”
This program was put on hold in 2020 due to the pandemic, but with people back to closer to normal lifestyles, the decision was made to bring it back this year.
“We skipped last year, because we didn’t think anybody was going out and didn’t want to support that, since at the time, they were trying to make sure everybody stayed home because of COVID. But we’re happy to be back and helping this year. It’s just been something that’s pretty important for us to try to do, and I’m happy we’re able to do it again.”

Steinmetz says there will be three vehicles on the streets at any given time providing the free rides, with the potential for a few more to be utilized during peak hours.
