A tragic event occurred last week. Sergeant Jay Nelson with Montana Highway Patrol explains what happened.
“So, on Thursday February 16th the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office was in pursuit of a vehicle with a known wanted person driving the vehicle. This was about 10 miles southwest of Eureka on Highway 37. During the vehicle pursuit, our trooper, Trooper Lewis Johnson exited his patrol vehicle as the suspect vehicle had stopped momentarily in an attempt to apprehend the suspect. The suspect’s vehicle then ran over Trooper Johnson. Trooper Johnson remains in serious, but stable condition, and the suspect was apprehended.” -Sergeant Jay Nelson
Sergeant Nelson notes that pursuits such as the one that caused the tragedy last week are happening more frequently.
“The last two years has been a drastic increase, we look at just vehicle pursuits like this with the Montana Highway Patrol, when I first started my career, it was a rare event. Now we’re dealing with these vehicle pursuits where suspects aren’t stopping and trying to allude law enforcement on nearly a weekly if not daily basis across our state.”-Sergeant Jay Nelson
