A series of reports is claiming that wild super pigs, adapted to the cold are expected to travel down south from Canada, then into Montana and United States where they will proceed to wreak havoc.
Marc Kloker the Region Six FWP Communication and Education Program Manager gives his take on the possibility of wild pigs in Montana.
“So, it’s something we definitely do not want in Montana. Basically, these wild pigs are wild in the sense that they’re invasive. They’re not from North America, they were introduced in several parts of the country, but concerning Montana, into Canada a number of years ago, probably 30 years ago when there was a market for that kind of thing domestically. I did a little background research, and it seems like that market kind of crashed and some of those pigs were just released basically by livestock owners in Canada or escaped at times. They are very adaptable and living way into northern Canada so obviously they can handle the cold and they can easily survive in Montana, but we know just from the experience that Canada has had and some other places in the U.S. they can be very destructive so it’s something we want to keep out of our sate if we can.” -Marc Kloker
So far Marc isn’t aware of any wild pig sightings in Montana, but he explains that wild pigs are very smart and adaptable. So smart and adaptable that various efforts to eliminate pigs in other regions have all failed.
“So, we don’t want them because every place they ever got established they have not been able to be eliminated.”-Marc Kloker
