Interview with Brian Gum the New School Superintendent

(Havre) – The Havre Schools District has received a new Superintendent. Brian Gum who took over the role earlier this month talks about when he first started and his history.

“So I started the position my first day was the 5th of July. This is my 25th year in education so previous to this I worked all over the country I’ve been a PE teacher, science teacher, coach, Middle School administrator, High School administrator, activities director, curriculum director. I’ve done a variety of things in education, but this is my first time as the superintendent.”

He goes on to talk about how he applied for the position.

“So was looking at the postings after Christmas in January and applied to MTSBA. So they ran the search for the superintendents and then came up and interviewed for the position and then following the interview day they offered me the position about 10:30 that night and I accepted that night. So yeah, here we are.”

Brian goes on to talk about what he feels he brings to the position of superintendent.

“So I have a lot of background in school improvement efforts I’ve done a lot with working on various community efforts, writing grants, different things like that. So my main focus is first year too is to really kind of see how everything moves and operates in Havre but really get involved in the community really try to make sure that the connections between the school and the community or solid right so that parents and students and just community members in general know what’s going on with the school so that’s really important. I really want to kind of target my efforts towards that I think, initially just to make sure that everyone out there knows that they’re welcome and in Havre public schools.”

he also talked about some of the big items he has coming up in his schedule.

“Yeah, certainly with the change in the schedule with the 4-day with supports calendar that’s going to be a big one. So next week the principal’s directors and myself are going to sit down and really make sure that as we roll those programs out in the buildings that parents and students understand what that looks like and then the new rules and expectations for families and kids as they attend to schedule they’ll be different and so over this year really making sure that that transition goes well for a community is going to be the top priority.”
