MSU-Northern Wrestling Alumni Dual Coming Up Saturday

As the winter sports here in Havre draw closer, MSU-Northern wrestling is hosting its first event of the season, its “Alumni Dual”. New Media Broadcasters spoke with head coach Tyson Thivierge, who said what the event will be all about.

“We’ve got 16 matches,” Thivierge said. “Two-thirds of our roster is going to be able to wrestle and compete for the first time this season.”

“14 of those 16 alumni are guys that I have coached,” Thivierge continued. “It’s a good opportunity for these (alumni) to reconnect with the program, come in (and) meet the guys on roster.”

Coach Thivierge is an MSU-Northern alumnus himself, having wrestled for the program and winning national championships in 1999 and 2000. He shares the experience trying to connect with his fellow Northern Lights wrestlers and a special feature of separating the alumni from the current Northern squad for the “Alumni Dual”.

“I try to stay as connect as I can,” Thivierge said. “The shirts say it all: we no longer wear singlets, so they wear shirts and shorts and the shirt says ‘Loyalty makes you family'”.

“We really preach loyalty within the program,” Thivierge continued. “That’s what these guys are coming back and doing.”

“We’re going to have plenty of other alumni in attendance and we’ll pass shirts out to them as well,” Thivierge said. “We love our Northern family and we’re just trying to keep this thing rolling.”

The “Alumni Dual” is taking place at the Armory Gymnasium and festivities kick off at 2pm.
