With winter sports starting next month, teams from around Havre and the Hi-Line are starting to make preparations. The Havre Blue Ponies boys’ basketball program is doing things a little differently, conducting tryouts this week.
New Media Broadcasters spoke with coach Walynn Burgess and he recapped last year’s Blue Ponies team and said what the mentality of the program is in its current state.
“We’ve been taking a lot of steps in the right direction,” Burgess said. “We made the state playoffs two years ago and had to play in the play-in game last year.”
“We have two returners and we are looking to get back in the gym and get ready to go,” Burgess continued. ”
“You want to be at state,” Burgess said. “It’s one of those things that there’s time to get the fundamentals right now and getting ready to go.”
Burgess said what the tryout process will be like for those who want to compete for a roster spot on the Blue Ponies boys’ basketball squad.
“We’re going to have 30 to 35 kids come try out,” Burgess said. “We’re going to get it down somewhere in the 20’s. (We’re just looking for) kids that want to be part of the Blue Pony program.”
“Thursday is the first day of tryouts. It’ll go Thursday through Saturday. 5:45am is our first tryout on Thursday,” Burgess said. “Any (Havre High) kids that want to come and try out, feel free.”
