The Havre Track and Field team has been going through ups and downs to begin the season and they haven’t even had the chance to showcase their talent yet.
Over the weekend, the Cut Bank Invite was canceled due to the weather conditions. Head coach Kari Filius told New Media Broadcasters that it’s been a motivational period for her squads in terms of practicing in environments in which they do not normally compete.
“We had one week outside and then the next week was inside. The weather hit us right away, so I didn’t think we would have (the meet),” Filius said. “It’s okay, but it’s not fun to practice inside all the time.”
“It’s been rough,” Filius continued. “(We’re) trying to keep everybody excited about working out when we’re inside and we didn’t get a meet. We’re okay, though!”
The schedule changes don’t stop there. The teams were notified on Monday at the upcoming Glasgow Invite was canceled due to the conditions, so coach Filius got together with activities director Mark Irvin and they were able to find competition in Frenchtown, which will be new territory for this program.
“We’ve never had a track meet in Frenchtown before,” Filius said. “We don’t (usually) get to go that way.”
“(The competitors are) excited to see where they’re at,” Filius continued. “Everyone is doing about three or four events. Some are just doing two because we haven’t been outside much. We haven’t jumped much just because we haven’t been in the pits because of the weather.”
“It’s just going to be a ‘see where we are’ (and) compete against other people besides ourselves,” Filius said. “It’s supposed to be a little warmer down there, so we’re excited to go.”
