(Kelly Korsbeck) – The Montana State University Northern Lights fell 24-6 in their season opener at Mayville State University at Jerome Berg Field in Mayville, North Dakota. The Comets avenged a 14-0 defeat at the hands of the Lights in last season’s opener in Havre with their victory. In addition, it was the Lights’ first defeat at the hands of the Comets all-time as the Lights fell to 3-1 in the overall series. The teams previously met in a home-and-home in 2017 and 2018.
The game was bookended by scoreless frames as neither team scored in the 1st or 4th quarters. Mayville got on the board early on in the 2nd quarter with a 39-yard touchdown pass. The subsequent PAT put the Comets up 7-0. After extending the lead to 10-0 with 1:46 to go in the quarter, the Lights responded with what proved to be their only points of the night. The Lights pulled within (10-6) on a Mason Dionne 61-yard run with no time left in the 2nd quarter, but the PAT was wide left leaving the score going into the locker room at (10-6).
After the break, the Comets added two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter early on the, second of which came off a fumble recovery on a blocked punt. The ensuing PAT made the score (24-6) in favor of the Comets which would turn out to be the final score.
The Lights will remain on the road next Saturday as they head to Billings to take on Rocky Mountain College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game can be heard on KPQX 92.5 FM or on hilinetoday.com.
