MSU-Northern wrestling did not have a good start to the season, losing at home last week to North Idaho College by the final score of (27-10). The first dual of the season only consisted of three Lights taking home victories and head coach Tyson Thivierge said the squad is ready to move on from that outing.
“It really falls on me. I didn’t get them prepared properly,” Thivierge said. “I’ve already been talking with them. I’m going to shoulder a lot of that (blame).”
“They have to get out there (and) be hungrier than what they showed (last week),” Thivierge continued. “I think there were a lot of nerves. We’ve been talking about it (and) the season came up quick.”
“Here we are in our home dual and everybody saw us kind of lay an egg there in my perspective,” Thivierge said. “I think we have to take our lumps. We’re going to finish some video, put it behind us, and move forward.”
The next challenge will arguably be the toughest for the entire season. One of two times this campaign will see the only sanctioned college wrestling teams in the state of Montana meet as Northern will head to Great Falls to take on Providence this time around. Thivierge shared how last season went for his squad and said that there’s something to prove, even if it means taking down a rival this early in the campaign.
“Providence is one of the top 10 programs right now in the country,” Thivierge said. “We’re in the top 20, but they’re in the top 10.”
“We want to go out there and make a statement, but it’s early in the year,” Thivierge continued. “That statement might not mean what it means in February, but they nipped us twice last year and we’re excited to get on the mat with them.”
The Lights and Argos will wrestle at the McLaughlin Center in Great Falls on Wednesday at 7pm.
