MSU-Northern suffered another loss on the 2024, dropping a (54-14) game in Butte to Montana Tech on Saturday afternoon.
Tech struck for its first touchdown with less than three minutes off the clock in the first quarter and would intercept the Lights on their first possession, but Northern got the ball back off a Braydon Cline forced fumble, which was recovered by De’Amoni Wright deep in Orediggers territory. On the very next play, Mason Dionne punched it in from one yard out to tie the game at 7.
The Orediggers responded 52 seconds into in the second quarter with another touchdown and did not look back. The first three TDs scored by Tech were all on the ground, including a 54-yard run midway through the second. The first passing touchdown from the home team occurred with four minutes left in the half. The Orediggers took a (30-7) lead into the break.
Northern adjusted at halftime, burning five minutes off the clock to begin the third quarter as Zach Brooks found Colter Wolstad for a 40-yard touchdown connection to end the drive. Tech responded, posting another passing touchdown and getting into the end zone from senior Landers Smith to close out the quarter to pull away. Smith recorded three rushing touchdowns on the day and 140 yards on 13 carries.
Northern (0-9, 0-7 in the Frontier) will close out the regular season hosting Rocky Mountain College for senior day next Saturday with kickoff at noon from Tilleman Field, a game that will be carried on KPQX-92.5FM and HiLineToday.com.
