MSU-Northern played Frontier Conference basketball on Thursday night in Helena, taking on Carroll College. The results were a (58-53) Skylights defeat and a (67-49) Lights setback.
For the Skylights (11-12, 2-8), they allowed No. 20 Carroll to get a double-digit lead in the game’s first five minutes and were held to a single-digit first quarter, (22-8). After battling back in the second, the game was within reach with the Saints holding on to a (43-37) edge. Northern cut the deficit further to one point with under two minutes left to play, but Carroll answered with clutch shots and iced the visitors at the free throw line. Becky Melcher had a career-high 18 points in the defeat, while Canzas HisBadHorse joined her with 11.
The Lights (7-16, 1-9) played a close first half of the first half, but the Saints began to pull away towards the end of the session. The halftime score was (34-21) as only three MSU-N players scored in the first half. The Lights continued to go cold in the second half as well, getting outscored, 33-28. Leon Sayers IV was a bright spot for Northern as he finished with 21 points. Jack Reardon was the other Light in double-figures with 10 points.
Northern basketball will welcome in Montana Tech for the Orediggers’ only visit of 2024-25. Game times will be different with the men on court first at noon and the women following at 2pm. Coverage will be on KPQX-92.5FM and HiLineToday.com.
