DILLON, Mont. — The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission has approved a year-round emergency fishing closure on a stretch of Red Rock Creek to protect one of the state’s last aboriginal Arctic grayling populations.
The closure extends from Upper Red Rock Lake to Elk Lake Road.
Fishing upstream remains open with restrictions.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is working to strengthen the grayling’s genetic diversity using fish from nearby mountain lakes.
The move is part of a broader conservation effort to preserve the species and may impact federal Endangered Species Act considerations.
