(Havre) – The Hill County Health Department announced on Thursday that a pool of mosquito’s have tested positive for West Nile Virus. Hill County Health Department Director Kim Berg told New Media Broadcasters how they were found.
“We do have some mosquitos that have tested positive for West Nile Virus and how that occurs is that there is active surveillance that goes on all year for those during mosquito season and our weed and mosquito district here traps them and they get sent into the lab and the get tested for West Nile.”
West Nile Virus is caused in humans, horses and other mammals by the bite of a mosquito. The best way to prevent West Nile Virus is to not get bitten by a mosquito. Wear shoes, socks, long sleeved and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods of time. Reduce the amount of standing water in or near your property, use an insect Repellent containing DEET and whenever possible, avoid spending time outside at dawn and dusk. This is when the mosquitoes that spread WNV are most likely to bite. If you keep windows open in your home, make sure you are using well-fitting screens without holes or tears.
