FORT PECK, Mont. (NMB) – The annual walleye spawn on Fort Peck Reservoir was fast and furious this year, lasting only sixteen days. A press release says that starting on April 11th and ending on April 26th, Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks fisheries and hatchery staff found favorable weather and cooperative fish throughout the spawning period.
More than 2,000 walleye were captured in trap nets, with 611 females spawned yielding about 68 million eggs. Overall, the weather was favorable to walleye spawning efforts this spring.
Unlike trap netting and egg collection efforts last year, which were quite poor, 2019 was considered more of an average year in terms of start time and number of eggs collected. Once collected, eggs were sent to the Miles City and Fort Peck fish hatcheries.
