HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Last month, District 4 HRDC in Havre sought a letter of support from the City Council for a new affordable housing development in town. Executive Director for HRDC Carilla French says that two weeks ago, they found out their proposal was not selected to move forward in a chance to be a part of the federal low income housing tax credit program.
“Every partnership that applies for the low income housing tax credits has to complete a mini market study to show the need in the community and it shows the need for more units of affordable housing within Havre. And so that current need is 88 and our proposal was just for 25.”
French says these units would be geared toward families who are well below the median income.
“Our hope is to build it just east of the current location of the HRDC. We own a small, four acre lot and our hope is to build 25 family units with a mix of 1, 2, and 3 bedrooms. And to also hopefully include some additional classrooms for our Early Headstart program.”
French says they will reapply for the program next year and keep working towards completing the project.
